Head of R&D

About the role

The Head of R&D reports to the Head of Malta Operations and the Chief Scientific Officer, leading all research and development activities across the API and FDF sites in Malta. This senior position is responsible for driving scientific excellence, managing a multidisciplinary team, and aligning local R&D efforts with global objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate process technology transfer and validation for generic APIs and solid oral dosage forms transferred from other R&D centres or third‑party sites.
• Oversee development projects with internal and external clients from initial concept through launch.
• Provide scientific guidance and support to operational units and plant processes.
• Lead a diverse team of scientists, ensuring optimal working environment and infrastructure.
• Manage R&D facilities including the R&D Lab, GMP Kilo‑Lab and HPAPI Unit.
• Evaluate and prepare proposals for contract manufacturing opportunities.
• Collaborate with other Medichem R&D sites to achieve global R&D goals.
• Contribute to site leadership, budgeting, capital investment proposals, and operational improvements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in chemistry, pharmacy or a related science; a Doctorate is an asset.
• Proven experience in process development and validation within the pharmaceutical sector, preferably in both API and FDF areas.
• Demonstrated project‑management capabilities.
• Strong organizational, communication and leadership skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a senior management team.
