Media Compliance Counsel

About the role

Deriv is looking for a Media Compliance Counsel based at its Birkirkara office in Malta, part of its European operations. The role interprets how marketing regulations apply to Deriv's content and products across 25+ jurisdictions, determining where marketing crosses legal boundaries such as investment advice, financial promotion and offshore conduct of business rules. It is legal interpretation rather than simple content review.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct legal and regulatory research on marketing regulations, solicitation rules and cross-border promotional requirements.
• Interpret how regulatory frameworks apply to Deriv's content and products, and assess when marketing content triggers regulated activity requirements.
• Determine the legal boundary between general marketing and financial promotion across jurisdictions.
• Provide legal guidance on cross-border marketing campaigns and advise when content complies in one jurisdiction but violates rules in another.
• Review marketing materials where legal interpretation is required and advise on licensing and solicitation rules.
• Research when promotional activities require specific licenses or trigger conduct of business obligations, and monitor regulatory developments.
• Partner with legal and compliance teams and bridge marketing objectives with regulatory requirements.
• Use AI tools to support compliance reviews while focusing on interpretation and judgment calls.

Required profile

• 5+ years in legal or compliance, with a focus on regulatory research, marketing compliance or financial promotions.
• Legal training or strong legal background, such as a law degree or extensive legal-compliance experience.
• Knowledge of financial services marketing regulations, including financial promotions and conduct of business rules.
• Experience navigating cross-border marketing complexity and making judgment calls on ambiguous questions.
• Commercially pragmatic, helping marketing achieve objectives within legal boundaries.
• Strong English and clear communication with marketing and legal stakeholders.
