Credit Risk Manager – 2nd Line of Defense (Malta/EU Passport)

About the role

The Credit Risk Manager will join novumbank’s second line of defence, based in Malta or remotely for candidates holding an EU passport. You will be responsible for independent oversight of the bank’s risk framework, ensuring robust identification, assessment and monitoring of credit and other key risks.

Key responsibilities

• Identify, assess, monitor and report on credit, liquidity, funding, operational, IRRBB, concentration and conduct risks.
• Maintain and enhance the Risk Management Framework, Risk Appetite Framework, policies and procedures in line with regulatory expectations.
• Update the risk register, analyse emerging risks and evaluate regulatory and market developments.
• Track performance against risk appetite metrics, limits and KRIs, investigate breaches and escalate issues.
• Provide independent second‑line oversight, challenge first‑line risk assessments, controls and reporting.
• Conduct thematic reviews, risk assessments and control testing to strengthen the control environment.
• Monitor credit portfolio performance, including arrears, defaults, NPEs, forbearance and concentration risk.
• Review credit underwriting standards, lending strategies and credit risk models, including IFRS 9 assumptions.
• Investigate risk events, operational losses and control breaches, and support corrective actions.
• Produce risk dashboards and reports for senior management and board committees.

Required profile

• Strong understanding of banking risk types and regulatory frameworks.
• Experience in second‑line risk oversight or risk management within a bank.
• Ability to analyse complex data, identify emerging risks and communicate findings clearly.
• Proactive attitude with a focus on continuous improvement of risk processes.

Required skills

• Knowledge of credit risk modelling and IFRS 9 provisioning.
• Familiarity with risk registers, KRIs and risk appetite metrics.
• Experience with risk reporting tools and dashboard creation.
