Public Health Officer

About the role

The Public Health Officer ensures that the vessel complies with international public health regulations and Explora Journeys standards, safeguarding the health of guests and crew. Working onboard, you will lead inspections, training, and corrective actions across deck, engine and hotel departments.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct daily spot‑checks and formal inspections to verify compliance with USPH, Shipsan, ANVISA and company procedures.
• Prepare detailed inspection reports and coordinate corrective actions.
• Maintain and audit all public health logs and training records.
• Deliver public health training and induction briefings for all crew members.
• Participate in external public health inspections and support corrective measures.
• Perform monthly E.coli testing of the potable water system and other microbiological analyses.
• Review and suggest improvements to standard operating procedures.

Required profile

• Fluent oral and written English; additional languages a plus.
• High school diploma; a degree in public health is advantageous.
• Minimum 3 years shipboard experience in food safety, water safety or hotel engineering, or 5 years ashore in related fields.
• Strong organizational and communication skills, able to interact with senior management.

Required skills

• Knowledge of USPH, Shipsan and ANVISA regulations.
• Proficiency in HACCP principles.
• Experience with E.coli and other microbiological testing.
• Ability to conduct inspections and produce USPH‑style reports.
• Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
