Lead Doctor (Ship Chief Medical Officer)

About the role

The Lead Doctor serves as the Ship Chief Doctor, delivering high‑quality medical care to guests and crew aboard an Explora Journeys cruise vessel. The role includes overseeing infection control, managing outbreaks, and responding to mass‑casualty events while ensuring compliance with company and international health regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Provide general and emergency medical treatment to guests and crew, maintaining confidentiality and respect.
• Document all patient interactions in the SeaCare electronic medical record system.
• Coordinate medical evacuations, referrals for shore‑side follow‑up, and isolation procedures when needed.
• Participate in drills, simulations, and training exercises; contribute to medical department training.
• Ensure compliance with CDC and other international reporting requirements for contagious diseases.
• Assist the Chief Doctor with inventory management of medical supplies, narcotics, and equipment.
• Support inspections by port authorities, USPH, USCG, and MCA.

Required profile

• Fluent English (minimum C1 level).
• Internationally recognised medical degree in allopathic medicine.
• Current full registration to practice medicine, in good standing.
• At least three years post‑graduate experience in general and emergency medicine.
• Computer literate.

Required skills

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Advanced Life Support (ALS) or equivalent certification.
• Proficiency with SeaCare electronic medical records.
• Computer literacy for documentation and inventory systems.
